What to Expect

Your product will be built in-house, by Upstairs Office. We build everything you need and nothing else. Should there be something that we can't cover, we pull on a network of trusted professionals. You will be working with Nickolai (CEO - product/strategy) and Jacqui (CTO - architecture/engineering) from kick-off to launch and beyond.

Yes, once the final invoice is paid, you own everything - the source code and the intellectual property. We provide a clear IP assignment agreement as part of our contract. Third-party/open-source dependencies retain their own licenses, which is standard for all software projects.

Most projects are fixed-price. We scope the project together, agree on a price, and collect a start-up fee proportional to the total project cost once the contract is signed - usually 20% to 50%, depending on project size and duration. Scope changes and new feature requests are quoted separately. For exploratory and open-ended projects, we may recommend an hourly rate so you can evolve the scope as you learn.

As the CEO and co-founder of Upstairs Office, Nickolai owns the outcome. From contracts to the technical infrastructure, he keeps the engine running. He is the primary contact for clients and partners alike — driven by a need to understand their business, not just their brief.

What he brings to the table:

6+ years of project management experience in the cybersecurity domain
Built and piloted the technical account manager program at guardsix (formerly Logpoint)
Skilled in bridging the gap between business goals and technical execution
DevOps and infrastructure expertise
A generalist by nature - comfortable across the full IT stack

Nickolai is driven by curiosity, always looking for a better way to do things. When he’s not working on projects for Upstairs Office, he might pretend to be Robin Hood, act as though he can actually ride a horse, or move heavy circles at the gym.

Jacqui Peterschmidt

CTO & Co-Founder

Leads the technical direction at Upstairs Office - from scoping and feasibility through to architecture and delivery. The driving force behind every project we ship.

As the CTO and co-founder of Upstairs Office, Jacqui owns the decisions around architectural direction, tech stack, and execution of each project. She ensures engineering quality stays exceptional, with architecture that’s built to scale and easy to maintain.

What she brings to the table:

10+ years of experience in software engineering and architecture
Architected systems handling real-time collaboration and complex data pipelines
Deep expertise in Typescript, PostgreSQL, React, and AWS/GCP
Core engineer on enterprise SaaS systems at the start-up and scale-up levels
Spoke at Indy Code on the art of reading other people’s code

Jacqui is driven by the prospect of helping others. When she’s not working on projects for Upstairs Office, she can be found in one of three places: riding her horse, winning bar trivia on Wednesdays, or at the gym.
