A language learning app focused on the acquisition and retention of vocabulary through the use of the spaced repetition system and flashcards. The app lets learners collaborate with native speakers, like a family member or a partner, for pronunciation, translations, and corrections.
The Challenge
Language learners struggle with expanding their vocabulary past the basics, especially if their primary avenue for learning is self-study with some of the better known apps. When you have been using Duolingo for a year and attempt to speak in the language you are learning, you can talk about your coffee being hot and the table being brown, but how much else can you really communicate? Jacqui has been learning Danish, as Nickolai is from Denmark, and discovered that she was missing a way to learn and retain vocabulary relevant to daily life.
Our Approach
Vocurious started as exactly that - a way for Jacqui to structure her vocabulary learning in a logical way, backed by scientifically proven methods (FSRS, a spaced repetition algorithm). The logical next step was to think about how we could best enhance the methods with what we had available; it turns out a native speaker in your pocket can help you learn and retain words faster. We have done this through enabling Jacqui to create cards and have Nickolai record pronunciations, correct spellings and translations, and suggest new words. This has provided her with a higher volume of quality flashcards that are relevant to her daily life.
Vocurious is a language learning app designed to make new vocabulary stick. While the app is designed to be collaborative in nature, it is usable as a solo learner. However, the real magic happens when you have someone to collaborate with. It adds an external motivator, as well as validation of words and translations, and pronunciation help.
Vocurious is meant to be a supplementary tool in your language learning arsenal. Whether you are going through formal education, you have a partner whose family does not speak your native language, or you are learning Italian from your Nonna, Vocurious can help augment your learning.
